NEAN 2002
1. Main Theme
True to its words, The main theme-Globalization and regional integration -reflects increasing interdependence across the globe reflecting the truth that no country will longer be able to shield itself from rapid changes. Interdependence involves imminent global issues, i.e. free trade, harmonization which have become critically important to current existing states. However, multitudes of people accustomed to traditional protectionism criticize 'globalization' for enervating the developing countries' growth engine.
Political and economic process of 'regional integration', as seen in NAFTA and EU, has taken enormous time and effort, but there still exist crucial obstacles to the completion of regional integration. To meet the increasing need for regional integration, Northeast Asian countries have also forged close mutual relations in terms of economic and cultural trade, but they all first have to resolve possible conflicts coming from historical issues entangled across NEA, territorial problems, fragile political stability, and discrepancies between their levels of economic development and democracy, to shape NEA's own regional integration. Similarities from Confucain heritage and Chinese letters, however, can provide NEA with and opportunity to explore a unique model of regional integration, while at the same time develop its strengths to successfully cope with challenges of 'globalization'.
NEAN hopes to advance discussions about challenges and opportunities the new trends of 'globalization and regional integration' offer Northeast Asian countries and their citizens. Through in-depth and detailed workshops can develope more insightful ideas and share their unique knowledge with other participants as a way to strategize feasible solutions to Northeast Asia's imminent issues introduced in respective workshops of NEAN 2002.
